Ed's
study of the Martial Arts encompasses over 30 years of training
in a variety of fighting systems such as Karate, Savate, Muay Thai,
Jiu-Jitsu, Kali, Boxing, Wrestling, and Jeet Kune Do. His teaching
philosophy is to combine elements of grappling and striking arts
to produce real life results. Ed believes in blending the study
of Martial Arts with sound scientific knowledge of the body, to
produce effective workouts through self-defense training and to
center the mind, body, and spirit.
Ed holds
Black Belt or Equivalent Rankings in Shotokan Karate, Chinese Kenpo
Karate and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, and Instructor's Certification in
Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai and Savate. Ed has fought in a variety of
categories including Kickboxing, Karate and "No Rules"
competitions.
In 1985 he
earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kentucky, where
he specialized as Assistant Instructor teaching movement and hand-to-hand
combat. In 1985, Ed moved to Los Angeles to further his education
in Martial Arts, Movement, Bio-Mechanics and Combat, earning a Masters
of Fine Arts from UCLA and studying with several world renowned
Martial Arts Masters including Bruce Lee's student and Jason Scott
Lee's coach for the film, "Dragon, The Bruce Lee Story"
Sifu Jerry Poteet.
Ed has assisted in instructing courses in defensive tactics for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Force Training Unit. He has trained in Special Weapons and Tactics with D.E.A. Mobile Enforcement Team II. He is currently engaged as a Professor of hand-to-hand combat, weaponry and stage combat at UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television. UCLA's department is ranked number 1 in the United States. As well as being the head of the Los Angeles based Combative Arts Academy and Studio City Martial Arts; he is also a fitness trainer certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Ed has also
served as a pre-production fight trainer to a number of celebrities.
